Poppies are a subject that lots of people find tricky to paint. To capture their papery and delicate petals, the medium of watercolour is absolutely perfect. Here Kaye shares 5 demonstration online videos showing how to paint these 5 poppies. Hopefully this will help everyone to have fun and enjoy creating each flower, unique and individual in style.
Materials used are brushes 18, 10, 4 and rigger – although it won’t be a problem to use different sized brushes. Artist quality watercolour tube paints are used in colours: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue. Paper Saunders Waterford 300gsm, which is particularly tolerant to wet-in-wet painting.
We are not looking at photographs of poppies, rather using our imagination to create flowers from washes that dry in certain shapes on the paper.
